Impact of Global Drought on Food Security
Global drought has become one of the biggest challenges faced by the agricultural and food security sectors. Climate change which causes increased temperatures and decreased rainfall has a direct impact on agricultural productivity. Fourth, drought drives shifts in dietary patterns. In conditions of shortage, people tend to shift consumption from more nutritious food sources to cheaper staple foods, such as rice. This has an impact on community nutrition, where the prevalence of malnutrition and anemia increases, especially among children and pregnant women.
Furthermore, drought leads to increased competition over limited resources. Conflicts over irrigation water and agricultural land can create social tensions in various parts of the world, worsening food security conditions. In this context, regional and international cooperation for water resources management becomes very important.
From a policy perspective, governments and international organizations need to increase investment in drought-resistant agricultural technologies. Developing plant varieties that are more adaptive to dry conditions, as well as using efficient irrigation techniques can be an effective solution. Education for farmers regarding sustainable agricultural practices must also be strengthened.
Seeing the trend of low rainfall levels and its increasingly widespread impact, it is important for countries to formulate mitigation and adaptation strategies to deal with drought. This includes improving early warning systems for drought, which can help farmers better prepare.
Finally, community involvement in decision-making related to water resources and food policy must be strengthened. By educating and empowering local communities, stronger food security can be established, while reducing the impact of future droughts.
